Vent Sesh: Why Can’t We All Just Get Along When It Comes to Healthy Food?

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

It’s officially Whine and Dine Wednesday, and boy do I have some venting to do! What I want to know is, why can’t we all just get along when it comes to embracing organic, wholesome food?

Eating well shouldn’t come down to party line. It’s neither conservative nor liberal to believe we all deserve access to wholesome food—it’s just good sense! So when I heard that California voters rejected Prop 37, a measure that would have required foods made with GMOs to be labeled as such, I couldn’t help but wonder, what is actually wrong with knowing more about our food? To be fair, I don’t really know anything about that particular legislation, not being a Californian myself, but the question still lingers.

On a similar note, I recently overheard some kids talking about how “gross” organic food is. The fact that our own children, who we work so hard to feed well, rebel in this way just bugs me to no end. But what can we do, when we all know kids will be kids—especially teenagers? One idea might be to share teen-written resources with them, like TeenInk, whose teenage writers cover a range of topics, including organic vs. “poison” apples.

Anyway, I definitely don’t have all the answers. In fact, I only have a few guesses. Fortunately we’ve got some tremendous resources to help navigate these waters. Ourselves! It’s important to be able to vent about our problems, so we can together come up with solutions. So let’s keep the dialog alive, fellow food-loving mamas!
