Full House: Inspiration Shines Through the Thanksgiving Food Coma

The perfect way to work off those extra slices of pie? A lovely walk in the woods.

    Friday, November 25, 2011

I’ve had to pinch myself a few times this morning to make sure I’m really awake. Yesterday’s food coma led to a major post-turkey mental fog that has extended to today…And I bet I’m not the only one feeling it, right?

So I’m going to keep this short, since I figure you’re either like me, still half asleep, like the rest of America, off to brave the Black Friday crowds, or, like my husband, blissfully unaware, shooting hoops with the kids in the driveway like it’s just another good day off work…Oh yeah, it is.

Today, I challenge Real Moms everywhere to work off yesterday’s food frenzy without punishing ourselves. A good love affair with food allows for days like Thanksgiving, where you just go a little overboard…okay maybe a lot overboard. And a great love affair with food means you can appreciate the overall feeling of vitality that comes when you use the good, clean energy you get from eating the best foods possible. Yes, I’m talking about celebrating food with some nice old-fashioned exercise.

Trump Card: 5 Winning Thanksgiving Place Card Ideas

    Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Food should and does take center stage on my table at Thanksgiving. So I think it’s only right to create some pretty scenery for it. But I’m not one of those superwoman DIY types who can whip up the most elaborate setting fit for a magazine cover. And I’m okay with that…but I’m still going to try like crazy!

With a little help from the web, I’ve narrowed down the place card pickings to five easy, festive, and elegant ideas.

It’s an App World After All: Grocery Store Time-Savers

    Monday, November 21, 2011

Raise your hand if you’ve got a full house planned for this Thanksgiving dinner. Now raise your hand if you’ve already done all your grocery shopping.

For anyone who’s still got their hand up, I salute you for your ingenious organizational skills in even the most crazed times. While Black Friday gets all the attention as a major consumer frenzy, I’m personally thinking there’s nothing really as insane as grocery shopping on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

It’s always a real madhouse, and yesterday was no exception. Yes, I’m one of the brave souls who met the crowds head on and lived to tell the tale.

But of course, I ended up forgetting some really important ingredients and am going to have to go back. [Cue dramatic sigh.] I bring this all up because this is the time of year when a good grocery shopping list is critical. I had mine with me, which was its own tiny miracle, but I’d left out the ingredients for one critical recipe: the gravy. Yeah, good luck enjoying the turkey or mashed potatoes without that!

So for anyone who’s still putting the final touches on the perfect menu and shopping list, I present what I wish I had found before: a roundup of good, easy online downloads and apps for smarter grocery shopping.

Cider House Rules: The Perfect Late Fall Treat

    Friday, November 18, 2011

The Martha Stewart Show, December 2007

This weekend is going to be hardcore raking time at my house. As with every year, the idea of actually doing it is incredibly daunting, but usually it ends up being really fun once we get started. And it’s always a great photo opp—even though two of my boys seem to have gotten too old to want to literally dive into the piles. There’s just something cheery about the crunchy leaves and crisp (okay, cold) air.

So I’ve got a few dozen compost yard waste bags lined up, rakes for every one of us (worth the investment, believe you me!), and a solid reward plan for all of us. I promised the kids caramel apples, but the sticky stuff hurts my teeth, so my husband and I are getting a different, more adult treat after the work is done.

Yes, while the kids are gobbling up sticky apples, we’ll be sipping a steamy mug full of sweet Apple-Pie Spiced Cider. I got the recipe from a friend of mine…you may know her, Martha Stewart? Well, she and I go way back…at least, my magazine collection does…
