When in Rome (or Chicago): Italian Resto Gives Us New Reason to Drool

    Friday, April 13, 2012

Mamma Mia, there’s a new obsession in my food-loving life. RPM Italian is the most recent  addition to Chicago’s River North restaurant scene, and believe you me, I am not the only person I know who’s already hooked.

Now you may have noticed that I very rarely write about restaurants—in fact I’ve only done it a handful times here. But when the house tomato sauce is this perfectly tangy and garlicky, you just don’t have a choice.

    Sugar Highs…And Big Time Lows

    Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Like most of us human types, I’m a big fan of sugar. From ice cream to cupcakes to anything chocolate, I just go nuts over the stuff. But there’s mounting evidence that Americans are getting way too much sugar—and researchers say that’s a giant threat to public health.

In a recent segment on this topic, 60 Minutes explored the potential risks of sugar in our diets. According to one of the doctors interviewed on the show, the average American consumes about 130 pounds of sugar a year. That’s 1/3 pound every day!

And yet, according to the researchers they interviewed, there’s more and more reason to avoid processed sugar and high fructose corn syrup than ever—from increased likelihood of heart disease and type 2 Diabetes to worrisome neurological effects.

None of this is to say that we shouldn’t ever enjoy sweet things. What kind of love affair with food doesn’t include dessert, right? It’s just important to pay attention to hidden ingredients. Yep, as you may have guessed, the real culprits are processed foods, which often include sweeteners in places where you’d think you could least expect them, like pasta sauce and bread.

Join the Conversation: Healthy Schools Campaign’s Free Webinars

Three cheers for the Healthy Schools Campaign!

Happy Spring Break season! From beach vacays to visiting with grandma, spring break fever certainly affects us all. But for me, this spring’s balmy temperatures have got me thinking about something decidedly less fun…While markets are beginning to burst with fresh produce, all too many kids are eating nothing of the sort.

I’m one of the lucky few who are able to prep my kids own healthy lunches every day. And even if I couldn’t, I’m also fortunate enough to know that their schools are among the few that do offer quality lunches. But sadly, as you probably know, all too many school districts  are simply not up to snuff when it comes to serving quality food.

With childhood obesity a growing threat to our public health, I worry that the lack of nutrition in today’s youth’s diet will have broad impacts on our communities—not to mention the individual child’s ability to live a happy, healthy life. That’s why I’m so grateful for organizations like the Healthy Schools Campaign.

Dye Hard: Using Real Food to Color Eggs

    Wednesday, April 4, 2012

As a health-news-spouting, eco-friendly-obsessing, and yes, fun-loving mom, I get a lot of people asking me about Easter egg dye this time of year. Is it okay? Can I get a hall pass if it’s not? Are there alternatives? Those sorts of things.

Thanks to Heather Katsoulis/Flickr for this spot-on pic of eggs colored with homemade dye.

Here’s the deal. I once tried making homemade egg dye, using things like beets and turmeric to achieve my colors. The process itself was fun, but I decided not to do it again because the colors were so muted.

Those artificial dyes you buy at the store do have some questionable ingredients (more on the sketch factor here), but I can tell you from experience, they’re really the only way you’re going to get the colors you want. Unless, that is, you can change your mindset. And I’m currently working on that myself…
