My Cup Runneth Over: An Ode to Three California Cupcakes I’ll Never Forget

    Friday, February 3, 2012

Sweet Arleen's cupcakes, aka, heaven on a plate.

Traveling across the country on a book tour can be hard work, but Real Moms know that if you have your cupcake-o-dometer on “search mode,” the nights away from the family can be a little easier when you find a good dose of chocolate, frosting, and sprinkles nearby. Here are my three top finds from my journey through the land of the stars:

    Shopping List: Superbowl Party Edition

    Friday, January 27, 2012

How much do I love Superbowl snacks? Enough to go on TV in a jersey and talk about 'em, that's how much.

The Superbowl is coming up, and with four sport-loving guys in my house, you can bet we’ll be watching…and eating. (Secretly I’m only in it for the snacks.) (But who isn’t?)

Anyway, even though it’s not till next weekend, I know a lot of us will want to plan the lineup in advance. So without further ado, I present my own grocery list for your Superbowl snacking inspiration.

    • White Bean Chili ingredients: A few cans of organic white beans, a pound and a half of organic chicken, and ten minutes are all you need to make my Superbowl classic chili. Seriously, it’s so easy you won’t believe how good it tastes.
    • Kettle Potato Chips: Organic and trans-fat free make for a guilt-free—and lip-smacking—chip. I love the Barbecue and Sea Salt flavors. Not feeling the spud? Here’s a list of some very tasty non-potato chips.

Hot Rod: Beth’s Fave Pretzel Cookies

I just love the fact that these pretzels I loved as a kid are now one of my sons' favorite snacks too.

    Friday, January 20, 2012

Forget about driving fast for excitement—to me, one of life’s greatest thrills is indulging in decadent desserts. You can’t do it all the time if you want to not be deemed a reckless eater, but you can still appreciate the speed and cut loose every once in a while.

The way to achieve the thrill on a regular basis without the possibility of an dietary crash? Be smart in your dessert choices and make sure you’re not super hungry or crave-y when you eat them. You can accomplish that by having healthy snacks of complex carbs, protein, and fiber through the day.

Since one of my kids’ favorite snacks is Snyders of Hanover’s pretzel rods, one ever-ready snack in my household is a few pretzel sticks mixed with a handful of dried fruit and nuts. Besides that tasty go-to trail mix idea, here are a few of my big tips when it comes to snacking:

In the Zone: 6 Weight Loss Tips from Dr. Barry Sears

    Friday, January 13, 2012

Ready to kick those holiday calories to the curb? My thighs and I are so with you. But since, as you know, I’m basically obsessed with food, I’m pretty picky when it comes to taking dietary advice. So when I find nutritional perspectives I can get behind, I just have to share. One philosophy I wholeheartedly support: “Losing weight involves being smart about what you eat.” Ah, Dr. Barry Sears, aka creator of the Zone Diet, thank you for putting it so well.

This Zone Diet sando looks delish. Hmm, is it lunchtime yet?

We’ve had a few chats over the years on my radio show, and trust me, the man knows what he’s talking about when it comes to taking control of weight issues. So while our New Years resolutions are still front of mind, I’m pleased to share his insights into America’s weight issues and six simple tips on how to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way.

For starters, don’t blame yourself. “The obesity crisis sweeping America is due to hormones being out of balance, not a lack of willpower,” says Dr. Sears.

“The true driving force behind our obesity crisis is the rapid increase in diet-induced inflammation that turns on the genes to make us fat and keep us fat. This inflammation comes from the combination of the over-consumption of refined carbohydrates that raise the hormone insulin coupled with increased dietary intakes of cheap vegetable oils rich in omega-6 fatty acids.” In other words, it’s not you, it’s our food culture.

What can you do? Start your healthy love affair with food, of course!

Here are six tips from Dr. Sears on getting and staying healthy and happy:
