Sweet Talk: An Ode to Stevia

    Monday, August 29, 2011

When they say it's natural, they mean it. Behold, the stevia plant!

    Dear Stevia,

    We love you.

    Sincerely,
    Real Moms

JK, I’ve got more flattery for Stevia in me than that! For those uninitiated in the ways of this all-natural herbal sweetener, it’s got low to no calories but is a whole lot sweeter than table sugar—try 200-300 times more in liquid extract form, or 15 times more in powder.

Cafeteria Lady: Perfecting the School Lunch

    Monday, August 22, 2011

I'm always a busy kitchen bee in the mornings. (Thanks for taking the pic, Todd Coslow!)

With back to school at hand, moms everywhere are once again plotting the perfect, easy, nutritious lunch-packing plan. Does such a thing exist? Maybe not. But we sure can try for it!

My three strapping…and, shall we say, particular boys have kept me on my toes for the last dozen years, so here are a few tried and true tips from my crazy household to yours:

    • Mix things up. Even if you do opt for a sandwich every single day, add variety to week to keep kids interested. It can be as simple as switching out the bread every few days. I like Rudy’s Organic Bread because it has several flavors, all packed with fiber and protein. And for another twist on sammy shape, add a FlatOut FoldIt bread in every once in a while too.Peanut butter and jelly is a classic for a reason, so do include it, but think of other ways to get protein in there as well. I like to alternate between sandwich meat and vegetarian options, from hormone-free ham and cheese to egg salad. My kids are also hooked on hummus, so it’s super easy to add a few veggies and cheese to the protein-rich spread for variety.

    Q-R-S-Tea! Memories of Tea Time

    Monday, August 15, 2011

You know, I really love a good cup of tea!

Growing up, I’d watch my Grandma gently remove the tea bag from the steaming teacup of hot water, twisting it around her polished silver spoon to capture every last drop of the tonic dripping from the teabag. She’d place the crumpled remains on the saucer and daintily stir in two teaspoons of sugar and a plop of cream–later I learned that that was how the British drank their tea. She’d place her cup and saucer on the table, covered with a lace tablecloth and then gather up two or three tea cookies-which she would later use to gingerly dip into her tea and nibble away.

This scenario always plays in my head when, today, I think of making myself a cup of tea (which is daily). There are plenty of days when I wish I had the time to retrace my Grandma’s tea time routine, however nowadays, that’s not always the case. Typically, it’s reserved for when I enjoy holiday tea time with my youngest son at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago (they often host holiday teas for families). Rest assured, I’ve come up with a tea time solution. It’s a bit different than Grandma’s but, it makes me feel just as lovely!

Soul Food: The Other Kind of Nourishment

    Monday, August 8, 2011

    It's all about balancing, right?

What I love most about food is how much it does for you if you just give it a good fighting chance. A little care in planning your meals scores you major points in terms of looks, moods, heart health, and of course, taste. But what about that other kind of nourishment? I think that any real homage to food should include a nod to the core reason we eat it—to give our souls a chance to live this fabulous life.

So in my ten-week lifestyle food guide (which you can learn and love when my book comes out), I include a little tidbit for your tiny but oh-so-critical soul nourishment in each week. Because, multi-taskers that we are, doesn’t it seem appropriate that part of your time nourishing yourself should also include some time nourishing your soul?
