Just Label It: EarthTalk Talks GMO Labeling Efforts

    Monday, April 16, 2012

By now, you’ve probably realized I’m a natural kind of gal. I love whole foods, fresh fruits and veggies, organic dark chocolate and ice cream…you name it, if it appears delicious, wholesome, and organic, I’m on it. So it troubles me that there are still no requirements that food labels indicate when they’ve been made with genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

As a mom, I strongly believe we should have the right to know what we’re feeding ourselves and our families.

Fortunately, I’m not alone in this feeling. Thanks to our partnership with EarthTalk, I’m pleased to share this info on a leader in the effort, the Just Label It Campaign.

Dear EarthTalk: Can you fill me in on what the “Just Label It” campaign is and what it is trying to accomplish?—Eric Altieri, Columbus, OH

Just Label It is an effort spearheaded by organic farmers and food producers, consumer and public health advocates and environmentalists to persuade the federal government to require that foods with genetically engineered (GE) ingredients be labeled accordingly. Consumers have a right, they believe, to be able to make informed choices about which foods they put into their bodies and support with their pocketbooks.

Most Americans aren’t aware that some 80 percent of processed foods at grocery stores contain GE (also known as “genetically modified,” or GM) ingredients—yet in polls 93 percent of us support the notion of mandatory labeling of such foods. At present the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t require labels for foods with GE ingredients.

Join the Conversation: Healthy Schools Campaign’s Free Webinars

    Monday, April 9, 2012

Three cheers for the Healthy Schools Campaign!

Happy Spring Break season! From beach vacays to visiting with grandma, spring break fever certainly affects us all. But for me, this spring’s balmy temperatures have got me thinking about something decidedly less fun…While markets are beginning to burst with fresh produce, all too many kids are eating nothing of the sort.

I’m one of the lucky few who are able to prep my kids own healthy lunches every day. And even if I couldn’t, I’m also fortunate enough to know that their schools are among the few that do offer quality lunches. But sadly, as you probably know, all too many school districts  are simply not up to snuff when it comes to serving quality food.

With childhood obesity a growing threat to our public health, I worry that the lack of nutrition in today’s youth’s diet will have broad impacts on our communities—not to mention the individual child’s ability to live a happy, healthy life. That’s why I’m so grateful for organizations like the Healthy Schools Campaign.

    Let’s Do Brunch: Easter Edition

    Monday, April 2, 2012

Newsflash: Easter is this weekend! I say that because honestly, it feels like it’s coming out of nowhere. Where did March go? Luckily I’ve still got plenty of time to indulge in one of my favorite past-times—obsessing over what to serve for a special meal. And Easter brunch will most definitely be that!

Who can deny the droolworthiness from Bite Me: A Stomach-Satisfying, Visually Gratifying, Fresh-Mouthed Cookbook?

From savory frittata to sweet-tooth faves like French Toast, I’ve decided to round up my favorite contenders from around the web, so we can all get a little closer to creating that one perfect meal.

Ramp It Up: Early Spring’s Hottest Veggie

    Monday, March 26, 2012

I'm loving Darya Pino's pic of fresh ramps at the farmers market.

One of my big-time gardening friends recently asked me what I felt was a very strange question: Would I be going ramp hunting? Instantly I was transported to an alternate dimension, one where I was comfortable in camo, unruly blond hair poking out of my fleece-lined hunting hat, my future meal centered squarely in the crosshairs…But wait, there was a lot wrong with this picture. Me hunting? Yeah, right. Even if it was just for a vegetable. And why were we talking about some obscure plant anyway?

But over the next couple of days, I felt like I heard people talking about ramps everywhere I turned…this foodie blog, that radio show, some cooking channel episode. I’d heard of them before, but now that I thought about it, I’d never actually cooked with them, let alone, actively stalked them.

Naturally I have to change that. So the first step was to get some intel on what I’d been missing. Here’s the deal: Ramps, which are basically wild leeks, are most abundant in early spring (thus the sudden rise in interest). They look like green onions with small white bulbs, but the flavor is more garlic-meets-onion than the milder scallion.
